We started off at a local spot where I found Dartford Warblers recently and we saw at least 3 Individual birds including one stunning male, but no photos unfortunately! We then moved onto Henley Road GP in hope of seeing the recently reported 4 Smew. We immediately picked up 2 Smew ( a Drake and a redhead) on the far side of the GP but for the next half an hour it was like cat and mouse trying to get near them! We then discovered that there were in fact 5 Smew (though still just the one drake) all constantly as far away as possible. At one point we managed to get a closer but very obscured view of the drake.

We then took a quick look at Dinton Pastures where we got some nice views of a female Pheasant.

Our final trip of the day was to see the Short Eared Owls at Papercourt Meadows. It's been over 6 weeks since I last visited so I was unsure whether they would still be there but luckily, there were still at least 3 birds showing well, a fantastic end to a great day!
The bird is almost certainly feral (judging by the fact it associates with feral Barnacle Geese and the area once had a feral population of 20 Snow Geese) although there has been no Blue Morph bird sighted in the area for several years. This led me to believe that this bird is likely to have come from another collection, but I still thought it was worth a look. The bird has been sighted in the Dell Field on the New Workings but today, it was nowhere to be seen. While looking for the bird another birder kindly informed us he had just been watching a Bittern from the Grove Lake hide. Those of you who know the area will know these birds are very scarce indeed locally and this bird is likely to have departed by tomorrow, proving birding is all down to luck!!

Unsurprisingly we headed straight down to Grove Lake where within ten minutes we caught sight of the Bittern. We then watched the bird for around 90 minutes foraging on the open ice. The bird was very distant (around 200-300 metres) but was certainly a showy individual. It was while watching the Bittern we got a brief glimpse of the Snow Goose. The flock of Geese flew past but unfortunately landed in the fields to the north of the lake.

We had only around an hour left so decided to go and look at Colebrook North Lake. The entire lake was frozen apart from a small patch where all of the birds were congregating. There were large numbers of Wigeon and Gadwall, along with 3 Teal and 1 Drake Goosander. There was also a strange hybrid asleep. On the way back we stopped off at the fields we thought the geese had landed in, and sure enough there were 15 Barnacle Geese with the Blue Morph Snow Goose amongst them.

January

January was one of the best months birding. The highlight was of course Hungerford's Glossy Ibis which allowed some stunning views. The bird stayed a long time allowing everyone to see the bird. After the Glossy Ibis we were also able to go and find the Great White Egret just 10 minutes down the road!! Of course a summary of January would not be complete without mentioning the Waxwing invasion. I was lucky enough to have these birds in my garden although I think the majority of birders were able to connect with these lovely little birds. They were tame as well!! A Great Grey Shrike at Arne was also a fantastic bird to see.
February

The highlight of February was undoubtedly my trip down to Dorset where the bird highlights include a very tame Ring Billed Gull which came down to bread in Poole Park, a Tawny Owl in the Arne RSPB car park and photographing Fulmars at Durlston Country Park.
March

March was a quiet birding month for me although the Waxwings continued to pose brilliantly. (Photos will appear in due course).

April

Another surprisingly quiet month but highlights included a Nightingale singing his heart out at Dinton Pastures who even decided to show himself for a bit. We also went up to Thursley common and found my first Woodlark and Tree Pipit. However none of these even come close to the main highlight of April, Fiona the Flamingo. Fiona continued her grand tour of the country and for 2-3 days she took up residence at Lower Farm GP. She was very distant but gave nice views through the scope, a great bird (though a little out of place!).
May

May, as always was a very good time for birding. For me a highlight was being able to watch a Blue Tit family in my own back garden, they successfully raised 3 chicks. I also managed to get some decent shots of Hobbys at the Jubilee River, as well as photographing a very obliging Juvenile Long Tailed Tit on my patch.
June

The highlight of June for me was the opportunity to see Great Bustards back in the wild in the UK, down at Salisbury Plain. We saw two birds one of which was the oldest bird in the programme. These are birds I hope to see again in the near future. Photographing (badly) Redstarts at a nest site at Thursley Common was close behind!!
July

July was also another fantastic month which begun with me attending a ringing session where I was able to get very close views of Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Treecreepers, Jays and Blackcaps. I also found a Yellow Wagtail nest site in Berkshire (a rare sight these days). I managed to get decent shots of both the beautiful male and the juveniles. A showy Sedge Warbler was also a highlight along with some Black Tailed Godwits in summer plumage at Titchfield Haven. I also managed to get my best shots of Terns here.
August

The highlight of the year, my trip to Scotland!! If I mentioned all the species seen this post would be even longer than it already is! Highlights for me were finally finding Crested Tit and Snow Bunting (Summer Plumage), photographing Red Grouse from just a few metres away, having good views of both Otter and Pine Marten, gaining good photographs of Dunlin but most of all, the White Tailed Eagles and Osprey. In the cairngorms we were lucky enough to have an Osprey fly right over our heads and on the Isle of Mull we were treated to mesmerising views of White Tailed Eagles fishing.
September

September was also one of the best birding months of the year. I was able to get within a few feet of a wild urban Fox as well as photographing Little Grebes at Dinton Pastures with young just a couple of metres from the hide. A summary of September would not be complete without my day trip up to Titchwell Marsh, Norfolk. I saw my first Curlew Sandpiper as well as getting very poor views of the Little Bittern.
October

Another good month where I got close views of Woodlarks up on Thurley Common, as well as photographing Red Deer Stags at sunrise at Bushy Park. The highlight of October for me though, was the Ferruginous Duck at Dinton Pastures. This is a duck I had wanted to see for a long time but every local bird had quickly been dismissed as a hybrid, but at last a pure bird turned up!!
November

November was a little quieter than October and winter migrants failed to arrive in large numbers due to the very mild weather. The highlight of November was of course my close encounter with a male Dartford Warbler which allowed an approach down to 2-3 metres.
December

The month begun with Short Eared Owls turning up locally which allowed for great views but unfortunately the light was not good enough for any great photographs. A trip to Slimbridge WWT was also fantastic with great view of my first Bewick's Swans and female Lesser Scaup. The main highlight for December however was Norfolk. I got some spectacular views of Golden Pheasant at Sculthorpe Moor as well as some wonderful views of Bearded Reedlings and Common Cranes (both had been on my wish list for a very long time!!). Although for me the stars were the 10 or so seals at Wells beach.
It was still a fantastic day's birding with around 30 Goosanders on show from the Grove Lake hide along with a drake Goldeneye. Most exciting of all was a female Bullfinch (they're not common down here by any means!!) which showed down to around 10 metres.
Of course this is a bird I would love to see but with thousands of people heading down to see it, what's the point? As the bird has been present since Spring, he doesn't look like he's going anywhere in a hurry!! Anyway, we decided to go down to Blashford Lakes today and one particular focus was the Whooper Swan which had been mixing in with the Mute Swans in Harbridge.

We arrived at around 10:15 to find over 100 Mute Swans and 6 (possibly 7) Bewick's Swans. I scanned through all the swans and failed to find the Whooper Swan until we discovered the bird was right in front of us, just 20 feet from the hedgerow, fantastic!! We had been warned by others to stay in the car to avoid spooking the bird but it was soon apparent the bird was not concerned by us at all!! Unfortunately the harsh sunlight on a pure white bird made photography almost impossible but I got a few shots worth posting. At around 11:00 we decided to head to Blashfords main reserve and after visiting Ibsley Water and Ivy Lake, we had seen Goldeneye, Pintail, Goosander plus the usual wildfowl, with no sign of the Fudge Duck. We then headed off to the woodland hide where we were greeted by the delightful sound of screaming children, great! Fortunately they left soon after our arrival so we were able to photograph the Lesser Redpolls and Siskins in peace!!

We then had a last quick look at the swans in Harbridge (both the Bewick's and Whooper Swan were still present, although the whooper was now around 50 metres away.
We were lucky enough to have an adult male Kingfisher, perching no more than 3 metres from the hide for around 5 minutes, amazing!! Hopefully the photographs to the encounter justice....
Saw around 60 species which isn't bad considering, but I also saw my first (very well camouflaged) Jack Snipe. For a Jack Snipe the bird showed well but far too distant for any photographs really, but a stunning bird to watch, especially its peculiar bobbing behaviour. We also saw 2 Water Rail from the same hide (Bittern Hide) which showed very well in the small "scrape" area visible from the right hand side of the hide. Certainly a great way to start the year, I just hope the rest of the year is as productive!!

On day 5 we decided to go and photograph some Bearded Reedlings at a private location. We were fortunate enough to see (and photograph) a number of birds and some allowed a reasonably close approach. On the way to to the site we stopped to admire a large flock of geese in a field, which to my delight contained 2-3 Bean Geese (of which sub-species I have no idea). In the same day we were also lucky enough to see an over wintering Turtle Dove but more exciting perhaps was an adult Common Crane which showed very well considering the shy nature of the species. I also managed to photograph an extremely tame Curlew, allowing me to get my best shots of this species yet.

On day 6 I went back to the Bearded Reedlings and the Turtle Dove, before moving on to Sculthorpe Moor. By the time we arrived at Sculthorpe the light was already going but on arrival we had very poor views of a Golden Pheasant (we could only see small patches of gold in the thickets). We moved onto the hide where we saw a number of Marsh/Willow Tit candidates. I managed to photograph a number of these birds which are currently being identified by an expert, so I should know which of the two species they are soon :) From the furthest hide, we had fantastic views of a Water Rail that showed extremely well in the fast fading light. Unfortunately, no sign of any owls :( Back near the visitor centre, we decided to have a quick look at where we had previously seen the Golden Pheasant, and to our amazement the male was sat right in the open just a few feet from the boardwalk. We carefully approached the bird although he clearly was not alarmed at our presence and we were able to get with 5 foot of the bird. I managed to get a few shots despite the fact that by now it was nearly dark.

A great end to a fantastic trip :-)
There were 6-7 Seals along with the usual waders. The biggest surprise of the trip was the Drake Red-Breasted Merganser which flew into the estuary briefly.
In the evening we decided to watch the Pinkfeet coming in to Lady Anns Drive. We watched around 3000 geese come into roost but before they arrived we spotted a raptor. The bird wast very distant (around 400 metres away), but large. The bird was easily buzzard sized and after some shocking photographs were taken, it was eventually decided the bird was one of the two Rough Legged Buzzards currently overwintering in the area.

On Boxing day we headed to Titchwell RSPB. The reserve itself was quiet apart from the 3000 Golden Plover found from the Parrinder Hide. The beach contained much more life with 1 Female Scaup on the sea along with around 20 Goldeneye. Waders included 100+ Bar-Tailed Godwit, 20+ Sanderling, 10 Dunlin, 6 Grey Plover, 70 Oystercatchers and nearly 200 Redshank.
As soon as we entered the hide (the name of which has escaped me!) we were told the sandpiper was on show next to a small group of Teal. I had my scope on the bird when it was immediately flushed by a Kestrel and that was it, I never saw the bird again!!! The birds on the lagoons were constantly being flushed by 2 Marsh Harriers which on one occasionally came reasonably close and allowed for a half decent record shot. Waders were the main attraction and Golden Plover, Lapwing, Dunlin, Ruff, Knot; just to name a few!!

After Cley, we went goose hunting. By this time the sun was beginning to set which meant the majority of the Pink Footed Geese were already heading to their roosts however we managed to find a small flock near Burnham. The majority of the geese were Greylag Geese but amongst them were 2 Pinkfeet and 1 White Fronted Goose. The birds were no more than 30 metres away allowing for some decent photographs, despite the appalling light! Merry Christmas Everyone :-)
The journey was relatively painless and once in Norfolk we could see the skeins of Pink Footed Geese heading off from their roosts. We are staying in Wells next the Sea next to the quay, which today was full of Brent Geese.

We decided to go for a quick walk to Wells Beach before the forecasted rain arrived. Along the shore line, there were a number of Oystercatchers, Bar-Tailed Godwits, Curlew, Redshank and Dunlin. The highlight of the walk was undoubtedly the small colony of tame Seals we discovered, some which allowed us to approach to less than 10-15 ft. Not bad for the first day!!
The two and a half hour journey each way was certainly worth it. First of all, I'd like to say what an amazing place Slimbridge is and I'd thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

We started off around the Rushy where an incredible number and diversity of birds were seen. 280 Pintail, 70 Bewick's Swans, 100+ Shelduck, 600+ Tufted Duck. The Bewicks were a first for me and watching their squabbles was fascinating. In the Peng Observatory we had even better views of these species and I managed to get a few reasonable shots (shown below). Of more interest was the returning Female Lesser Scaup which we were shown as soon as we entered the observatory. For those of you unfamiliar with female Lesser Scaups, they are practically a female Tufted Duck with slightly peaked head and only nail black on the bill, not easily distinguishable features when the bird is asleep 60 metres away!!

Next off we went into the captive collection. These provide stunning photo opportunities for species usually only seen through a scope, but we saw too many species to list!!

Our next target was to try and see the Bittern. People have been lucky enough to see this bird showing in the open recently but our views were very poor; so bad that we could only see the birds neck!! From this hide we also saw over 500 Dunlin.

Finally we tackled the last section of the reserve. This part was perhaps the most productive, birds seen include: 50+ White Fronted Geese, 200+ Golden Plover, 3000+ Lapwing, 1 Peregrine, 1000+ Teal, 700+ Wigeon and 100 Barnacle Geese.

Unfortunately by this time the sun was already setting but we decided to return to the Peng Observatory for the Swan Feed and to have another scan for the Lesser Scaup. We scanned for the scaup furiously but it was nowhere to be seen, until we discovered it had been asleep in front of us all the time, only around 10 metres from the hide!!! As the light was so poor, I only got a couple of bad record shots, but it was great to see this rare little bird so close. The feed itself was also fascinating as we watched over 100 Bewick's Swans coming into feed. All in all a great days birding!

Unfortunately these owls are not as co-operative as other owls and they only come out to play at dusk! We were in position by 2:00 and at 2:20, the first Short Eared Owl appeared (my first for 14 months!!). Over the course of the next 2 hours we saw a total of what we estimate to be 7 Short Eared Owls. At times they landed allowing us to get some really stunning views although for the most part, they remained to distant for photography. We were also lucky enough to see 1, possibly 2 Barn Owls hunting, although unfortunately they did not appear until the sun had set. A great afternoon and I hall be returning if they stick around!
We saw a total of 8 birds (yes 8!!!) in a spot which is relatively small in heathland terms. All but 1 of these birds were male, which probably means the females were remaining hidden which could put the figure of birds on site nearer the 15 mark. I can't put into words the incredible views we had of the birds, but hopefully the photos below give an idea of how well the birds showed and just how close they were!!

Unfortunately the finder of the bird has asked me to keep the location of the birds a secret, so for now, it is "an undisclosed location in NE Hampshire"! There were number of Stonechats at the site along with small numbers of Meadow Pipits and a lone Sparrowhawk and after around 20 minutes of searching we heard the unmistakable sound of a Dartford Warbler. It was soon apparent that there was more than one bird and by the end of our walk we were confident we had seen at least 3 individuals! As always, they were a really nightmare to photograph but I did my very best!! I was particularly excited about seeing these birds as they were my first Dartfords for 8 months! Going back next weekend for more!
We were fortunate enough to have some great views of the many wildfowl and I was able to obtain my best Gadwall and Tufted Duck photographs. Unfortunately the Bearded Tit had not been seen all day and he was not to show for us either. However we had better luck with the Water Rail; a bird showed on and off for around 30 minutes before disappearing into the reed bed. This is only my 3rd water rail and I was able to get a couple of shots as the bird was reasonably obliging! Overall, a very pleasant afternoon!
As it happened, there was little for us to see with the highlights being brief views of a Water Rail, around 10 Wigeon and 3 Pheasants. None the less I managed to fire off a couple of half decent shots...
The aim of the trip was to photograph the ducks etc, against the setting sun. Birds seen included the usual suspects really with a few smaller birds such as Magpie, Pied Wagtail and Carrion Crow. We also witnessed a kestrel hunting above the island as well as a Buzzard perched on a pylon to the rear of the activity centre.
We had extremely brief views of a Kingfisher and reasonable views of the many wildfowl around including Wigeon, Shoveler, Pochard, Little Grebe and Great Crested Grebe, just to name a few!! The highlight of the day was the good views we got of the Barn Owl in his box! Hopefully the lack of the fudge duck today does not mean he has left as I know many would like him to stay for the winter.
At first the lake yielded little of interest apart from a few Lapwing and a couple of Snipe, along with the usual wildfowl such as Teal, Mallard, Pochard and Tufted Duck. Scanning through all these ducks I spotted what at first looked like a standard female teal, but in comparison to the other teal, this bird was more boldly marked and slightly larger. Unfortunately it was too far away to make a positive identification, but eventually it came within around 30 metres of the hide, helping me identify what has turned out to be my first Garganey. A very late bird too, with only one other of its species in the country which is currently down in Somerset!! On the journey home a couple of Barnacle Geese were seen which were a nice bonus!!
Started off on the beach near the sailing club where we quickly found some Turnstones (Tame as ever) and a few Redshank and Oystercatchers, which were not so tame!! We decided we were not going to cover the eastern side of the reserve today as last time we visited that side it was deserted. From the bearded tit platform, we could see no Bearded Tits, but could hear a number of Cetti's Warbler singing in the bushes. From the first hide (name I've forgotten!) we could see too much to list. We spent 80% of the day in this hide! Highlights included a Water Rail, Black Tailed Godwits, Snipe, Lapwings, Oystercatchers, Dunlin, Ringed Plover, Greenshank, Redshank, Turnstones, Curlew and there are probably a few I have missed. There were probably well over 100 teal on the site, the most I have seen in one individual place, but surprisingly few Wigeon and Shoveler. From this hide we also had good views of my first ever Weasel who was right in front of the hide, but very difficult to photograph (see below). From the second hide it was much the same as the first with no new species being record, so after a while we decided to return to the first hide again. Not much else apart from a Buzzard which perched on the nearby fence posts. From the viewing platform outside the reserve only a few Cormorant and a Little Egret. Total number of species was something around the 65 mark, so a very successful day, lots of photo's below!!
